Feed Terri!

I called my mum in Italy to find out if they have any news there about the Floridian, Terri Schiavo, whose feeding tube (nutrients and water) have been removed 12 days ago. She mentioned that they do get the news there and since they live near Rome, they also know of the opinions of the religious leaders there.

I've attempted to read more about Terri Schiavo's plight, and the more stuff I read, the more I want her husband to have a change-of-heart and give Terri another chance at life. Is it a medical miracle that she's survived this long without food or water, or is it Terri willing herself to live and not to give up? We'll never know, I suppose. The decision to slowly kill her through starvation is the will of her husband and I've read that he's been trying for years to “end Terri's suffering”. As much as there's probably no cure for her disability, there's still that hope that she will pull-through…

I'm reminded of my recent service to the mentally and physically disabled in my uni's Special Games service. I remember the first time that I saw the athletes, I thought, why would anyone want to live as such — then I began to know more and more about them, and interact with them and saw that despite any disability, life is still worth living. People will probably argue that it's not about disability, it's about mercy or that it seems to be more and more about politics and religion. I see it as the basic human need of food and water — of living and surviving.
