Race Recap: Bay to Breakers 12k

Thursday, 02 June 2011 | 12:25 pm

Race: 100th annual Zazzle Bay to Breakers 12k Footrace
Date: May 15th, 2011
Start Time: 7:00AM
Location: San Francisco, CA

This is one of the more fun events that I’ve done for the second year in a row. I said I’d only run this event once (last year) but seeing that it was their 100th anniversary and they had MEDALS for all finishers, I thought it was too good to pass up.

My sisters, friends and I never run to race this event, either. So the biggest planning item that we had was what costume we needed to wear! I’ve said all along that I wanted 80′s theme (workout gear, etc.) but they kept bringing up different themes and ideas until a WEEK before the race when they finally acquiesced to my idea! :D This is where the fun began…

Costume:
My sis, Annelle, was a dance minor at university, so she already had the outfits like, leotards, tights, and such. Still, I wanted semi-updated items like, footless tights, leg warmers and a flesh-toned leotard… Which I eventually found after days of searching :) Jane Fonda-esque workout gear. Check!

Race Day:
This year, the organizers took out two important elements that made the race worth doing: floats and alcohol. That being said, there seemed to be less NEKKID people, as well! Gone were the rowdy drunks but at the same time, there were also less people who were in the mood, that is, dressing up! There were literally more runners this year (that I noticed anyway) in regular running clothes — and it’s not like they’re elite either! Seriously, why would you race such a fun event such as this one?!

The Course:
As usual, the course was the same as when we ran it last year — hilly and challenging in some parts! The weather was nice despite raining somewhat (or drizzling!) in some areas. That’s probably why there were less nekkid people (not that I was looking forward to them because it was still the same ol’ wrinkly exposed bodies!) it was somewhat cold to go full commando! Hahahaha. Anyway, we seemed to breeze through the course quicker this year. Maybe because we knew what to expect. Or maybe because we didn’t have fairy wings this year that got in the way! LOL We’ll never really know because…

This might have been the last time I’ll be doing the Bay to Breakers race! Though this second year was even more fun than the 1st, there has to be something else that would draw me to participate for a 3rd time. Still, we had a fabulous time on the course thanks to our recognizable 80′s outfits AND playlist! Yes, we had an iPod and a tiny portable speaker that played ALL 80′s songs and along the race course, we’ve even sung along to some of them. :)

Anyway, if you’re going to run Bay to Breakers, please do two things: 1) Dress up. 2) Run with friends :)

Official Chip time: 01:57:31 (LMFAO again, we weren’t racing it!)

Race Recap: She Runs LA 10k

Thursday, 28 April 2011 | 02:57 pm

Race: NikePlus She Runs LA
Date: April 28th, 2011
Start Time: 9:00AM
Location: Cheviot Hills, CA

This was not your conventional 10k race where participants congregated at a pre-determined location and all ran the same race course. Nike-sponsored “She Runs LA” program is actually a virtual race where each participant runs the distance in their own neighbourhood (or essentially wherever they wish). At the completion of their run, if one wanted to be entered into the sweepstakes for Nike products, one would need to upload their run results to the Nike Running website — the caveat, they’d have used their own Nike+ system (i.e., Nike+iPod, Nike+ App on the iPhone, etc.) in order to send the recorded time/distance.

That being said, I ran my own 10k race at west Los Angeles’ Cheviot Hills Park. It’s a 2mi loop, which meant that I only needed about 3 rounds (and then some) to complete this Nike+ 10k challenge… Well, I completed it but was somewhat miserable the entire time!

It was warm (around 72 deg F) and the run reminded me how much I had fallen out of fitness, compared to only a few weeks ago when I was running a bunch of personal bests! Ahhhh. Anyway, the course was also quite hilly and that, along with the temperature, contributed to my high heart rate and labourious breathing. Average pace was 13 min/mile!  Anyway, that’s that. I’m deffo going back to running at least twice a week (once during the week the other during the weekend) in order to get my fitness back for the Camp Pendleton mud run (a 10k of obstacles!) and Seattle half marathon, both in June.

Back to this race — another fun thing about this She Runs LA challenge is the post-race party tonight at the Nokia Theatre in LA Live. Paid participants got two tickets for the concert! There’s also Bliss Spa and other vendors at the party so it should be a fun evening. Then there’s the race shirt — a cute, pink Dri-Fit tank top which reads “She Runs LA”  on the front and then “Powered by Nike+” on the back… See awesomesauce pic below ;)

We’ll see how the party goes tonight but so far, not a bad experience, albeit a difficult 10k run for me! :)

Recap: Knott’s Coaster Run 5k

Tuesday, 29 March 2011 | 04:06 pm

Race: 6th Annual Coaster Run 5k at Knott’s Berry Farm
Date: March 27th, 2011
Start Time: 7:30AM
Location: Buena Park, CA

OK, I was going to take this race easy — I just wanted to do it as a recovery run/ excuse to eat some pie and get a cool medal (Snoopy!) in the process. What I didn’t expect was to PR! LOL I have back-to-back Marathon-5K PR’s now. Chip time: 00:27:33.2 (placed 7th in my Age Group! Out of 85! wOOt!)

Part of the reason why I went fast was:

  • I didn’t want to get too wet! It began to drizzle again! AHHHH… Second consecutive race to get soaked?! Finishing sooner meant getting out the wetness quicker!
  • I wanted to break free from the crowd. The course was PACKED all the way but for a short portion after the second mile and partly onto the finish. You literally had to weave your way through the crowd!
  • I felt good! Well, running at a faster pace really felt effortless until around mile 2.5 when I was really feeling the burn! LOL At that point, I was either going to slow down and walk or keep going and I went for the latter. I could rest in the end as I ate my pie, I thought! But man, my HR shot up to a scary 193bpm (averaged at: 182bpm)

Overall a lovely race despite the cloudy/rainy weather and puddle that I stepped into (twice! — One really could not avoid the puddle. At least I had my Vibram Five Fingers on!) I also love the freebies: reusable race bag, Coaster Run tee, pie and finisher’s medal!

Oh, this also marked the first race (since 2009) that my VTB/bestie and I reunited! WHEEEE!

VTBs (re)Unite!

I also got a photo with Snoopy (he was sooooo soft and not-your-typical-stinky-mascot).

Did I mention we had pie and a finisher’s medal? :D

I’d totally do this again next year! ^_^
