Weekend Training Review (11-12/Dec)

Sunday, 12 December 2010 | 03:59 pm

Saturday: 11mi scheduled. 6mi completed.

I’m pretty sure my legs hate long runs, especially since they haven’t been properly prepared for them (i.e., lack of midweek training). I went into this run all gung-ho and uber-motivated to succeed. I had a plan, too and based my pace off of the McMillan Running Calculator: Warm up at 13:30 pace for 3mi, do 6mi in or around 12:30 pace then cool down at an easy 14 min/mile pace. No walk breaks, even.

Well, I felt fine the first 3 miles, even briefly walked to take a sip of Nuun(-enhanced) water but around 4.5 miles, I began to feel some slight pain on my right (read: right!) leg — its along the outer side of the leg, just below the knee. I think it was a pinched nerve and try-as-I-might to shake it off, it just got worse as I continued. So I stopped, stretched out my IT band, quads and calf muscles and walked for a few yards. It felt somewhat better so I began to jog again. The pain was still there, but it wasn’t as bad as when I began to feel it so I decided (and upon my sister’s insistence!) to end the run early. 6 miles in the books, but with some right-leg scare. :-\

I have to add that my left leg felt left-out (and it might’ve been psychosomatic) but there was some slight tingling there, too.

Later that evening, I rolled the right leg w/ The Stick, kneaded IT band on the foam roller, applied some KT Tape, iced, then elevated it. I also kept my compression socks on as long as I could from the morning that I began my run ’til mid-afternoon.

Neither pain felt wasn’t sharp (just tingling), so if I were to self-diagnose (too late), I’d say it’s probably a pinched nerve or something along the lines of going too much too soon. LOL. Lesson learned: gotta do midweek runs.

Sunday: Cross-Training. Cardio X completed.

I did my cardio later in the day, rather than in the morning and felt so much better. I was wary of how my right leg would do but it held up nicely, even during plyometrics routines (though, I was on the side of caution and didn’t overdo it). Max HR went to 175bpm, so I got a nice sweat going.

Weekend Training: Long Run & Bike

Saturday, 21 August 2010 | 07:40 pm

August 21st
Long Run: 8mi (Barefoot) + Walk: 2mi (Barefoot)

My longest barefoot run yet! My calendar dictated that I had to do 13mi, but since I’m still trying to catch up with my training, I decided to at least do 10mi, running 8 and walking the remaining 2.

I was surprised that I was able to run for 8 miles straight though I stopped twice, around 30 seconds each time, to have a sip of my electrolyte-replacement drink (i.e., Nuun!) I’m also glad that I didn’t feel any aches or pains with my calf, arches, or knees! This barefoot regimen is really promising… I’ll keep running barefoot during my midweek runs from now on, though — next weekend, when I do 11 miles, I’ll be back in shoes. *sigh* Heavy, clunky, cushion-y shoes… ;)

My two mile walk was another matter — since it was already late in the morning, the sun was glaring which made for a warm day. I kept myself motivated by telling myself that that was my “heat” training. :)

Gear used: Vibram Five Fingers KSO, Footsmart calf sleeves, long sleeve compression shirt, Amphipod water carrier, Phiten titanium necklace

Addendum:
Ok, I forgot to type in that after having lunch today, and when the time came to go upstairs to take a shower, I was so sore! LOL it literally felt like I ran a half marathon this morning.

My left knee is also sore, but does not exhibit the same pain as I had before.

August 22nd: Bike Training

Had an easy 11mi ride, which is great for recovery (though, I’m still sore today from my 8mi run on Saturday!)

Going to see how I feel tonight and whether I should go for a run or just rest. O_O

Pantry Raid!

Friday, 03 April 2009 | 06:31 pm

Finding food in our pantry was quite the challenge. Essentially, you would need a compass, or rope, or breadcrumbs just to make sure that you can find your way out. Ok, so I exaggerate, but you would at least need a torch to light your way as you claw about. It’s probably one of those days that I decided (before lunch) to re-organise the pantry. Thinking it would only take me 30 minutes to do the task (also thought that it would also help build my appetite for lunch), some OCB got the better of me and I ended up spending just about two hours replacing and throwing away gross/expired goods. >_<

Some of the stuff I found:

  • cough syrup that expired in March 2007
  • “Freeky Fries” (chips from Italy which expired in 2008; but mum brought it home with her when she visited in 2007!)
  • Trader Joe’s/Whole Foods lady fingers (expired in 2005)
  • …and finally, an acorn (yes, acorn) wrapped in a paper towel ?!

It was actually sad to see myself throw away the half-eaten cookies, expired cashew nuts (there was still 40% left in the container), several opened but now stale (and expired) crisps… It made me realise that we were rather wasteful! Like, I saw two opened packets of Terra chips! I’m guessing one person didn’t know that the other had a packet opened so both were opened and partially consumed.  *sigh*

Just hoping that this re-organised pantry will make my sibling(s) and I more mindful of what we eat (and at least attempt to consume the lot we bring home from the store!)

Photos below for posterity (it was actually Sheryl‘s idea to take pics! hahaha) ;)

Figuring out what to keep and what to throw away
