Shod Run: 1mi

Tuesday, 31 August 2010 | 12:26 pm

1mi run on Monday, 30th August.

Posting this as a separate workout record (well, like I used to until I got lazy posting anyway!) because this is the first time in nearly two months that I went on a training run wearing shoes! It felt totally alien and rather odd but I’m happy to report that my natural gait has changed from landing on my heel to landing on my forefoot first! And that’s just running barefoot (rather, wearing VFF’s) for two months!

Now back to the run: it was ok for the first few yards but I could already feel the difference between shod and unshod running; I felt like I was going too hard and had to remind myself to land lighter on my feet. I was also going too fast, though, my sis was the one that noted this because she was running out-of-breath trying to keep up with me. I guess springy shoes do add, er, spring to your step!

Once I slowed down to my “regular” midweek pace, though, was when I began feeling some niggles around my foot & leg muscles. Again, I might’ve been going too fast too soon, so I told my sis that I needed to stop after exactly a mile.

I’m glad I’m easing back into wearing shoes, but I’m kind of worried now that my “stability shoes” and “stability  insoles” are going to be a bit too much for my “updated” gait. Of course, I could just be thinking too much into it and probably just shocked myself back into shod running (kinda like how I went 2mi the first time I ran barefoot!) Breh. I have to add that I could already tell my shoes were too heavy! They felt clunky and just weighed down on my feet; and this was the lightest pair I have!

So, I’ll start looking into minimalist running shoes*. They should be lighter (less materials) and it’ll be better to be lower in the ground anyway — less cushioning means I’ll land softer on my feet since I’ll be able to “feel” the ground better…

I’ve another run tonight and will wear shoes again. Let’s see how I feel then.

*I found two great sites that can help my research. I remembered RunBare.com had a list of minimalist shoes, as well as this site I found via Google — it’s like a comprehensive list of minimalist running shoes! I’m checking out these options on shoes anyway until get the courage to run barefoot in a marathon… +_+

Weekend Training (28 Aug)

Monday, 30 August 2010 | 11:42 pm

Saturday (August 28th)
Long run; 9mi. Walk 2mi. Gear used: VFF, compression calf sleeves, Amphipod belt. I guess my body was still recovering from whatever I had on Wednesday because I felt rather fatigued in the beginning of this run (and at the tail end). Then again, it could just be the mileage! This is the furthest I’ve gone wearing Vibram Five Fingers and so far, so good (except for getting tired, rather than feeling energized with my previous runs). Then again, I also hardly stop now (i.e., don’t do my regular run-walk intervals) so that could be it, too! LOL. So, let’s review this again: beginning of run, tired; mid-run, fine; end of run, tired. Yep, that makes loads of sense.

Sunday (August 29th)
Strength Training, 38 mins. Skipped the bike training ride and did some resistance training instead. Worked with 12lbs weights and did not finish the P90x Shoulders and Arms video! I need lighter dumbbells >_<

Weekend Training: Long Run & Bike

Saturday, 21 August 2010 | 07:40 pm

August 21st
Long Run: 8mi (Barefoot) + Walk: 2mi (Barefoot)

My longest barefoot run yet! My calendar dictated that I had to do 13mi, but since I’m still trying to catch up with my training, I decided to at least do 10mi, running 8 and walking the remaining 2.

I was surprised that I was able to run for 8 miles straight though I stopped twice, around 30 seconds each time, to have a sip of my electrolyte-replacement drink (i.e., Nuun!) I’m also glad that I didn’t feel any aches or pains with my calf, arches, or knees! This barefoot regimen is really promising… I’ll keep running barefoot during my midweek runs from now on, though — next weekend, when I do 11 miles, I’ll be back in shoes. *sigh* Heavy, clunky, cushion-y shoes… ;)

My two mile walk was another matter — since it was already late in the morning, the sun was glaring which made for a warm day. I kept myself motivated by telling myself that that was my “heat” training. :)

Gear used: Vibram Five Fingers KSO, Footsmart calf sleeves, long sleeve compression shirt, Amphipod water carrier, Phiten titanium necklace

Addendum:
Ok, I forgot to type in that after having lunch today, and when the time came to go upstairs to take a shower, I was so sore! LOL it literally felt like I ran a half marathon this morning.

My left knee is also sore, but does not exhibit the same pain as I had before.

August 22nd: Bike Training

Had an easy 11mi ride, which is great for recovery (though, I’m still sore today from my 8mi run on Saturday!)

Going to see how I feel tonight and whether I should go for a run or just rest. O_o
