A month!

Monday, 18 April 2011 | 12:01 pm

In (nearly) a month since the LA Marathon, I PR’d my 5K, danced at my friend’s wedding in 4 1/2″ heels, swam in the ocean, got sick for a week, and finally, received my LA Marathon finisher’s certificate in digital format:

LA Marathon Certificate

Oh, I also gained like, 4 or 5lbs back! Hahaha. Such is the life of a pseudo-runner/triathlete. I just have to get back on the training bandwagon soon as I don’t want to suffer (much) at the Bay to Breakers 15k, then the Camp Pendleton Mud Run and then my super-sprint triathlon (where once again, I’m worried about the swim since it’s 400m in the ocean despite it being a recreational division).

Also, I’ve got to start logging my calorie intake/expenditure religiously again… Not that I’m planning on losing another 12 lbs, but I was inspired from this morning’s Boston Marathon runners to put my training back into gear. As much as I hate his guts (for silly reasons), American-Ryan Hall finished 4th with a PR, I believe. He’s been self-coaching for a year and his Boston finish just shows how  impressive that is. Of course, if one’s an elite, they have had that sort of discipline when they trained with a full-time coach, but still — it helps inspire non-elites or weekend warriors like me that self-training works, as long as one’s disciplined enough! (D’uh!)

Another speedy inspiration was the women’s elite runner up, Desi Davila. She nearly out-kicked the Kenyan, Caroline Kilel, at the last 400m! Desi is a petite 5’2″ and weighs about 86lbs! I’m not saying that I’m targetting that weight, but man… There’s really hope for these short legs! :)

Keeping motivated!

I think signing up for MyFitnessPal kick-(re)started my training. OK, I know it might eventually become cumbersome to enter my daily caloric intake, but for now, it’s rather exciting to see how many “calories” I have left to consume (especially when I had just finished a workout).

I wish it had a bit more features, though — like, taking into account the # of hours of sleep one had, optional fields for muscle mass, water weight, etc. Still, you really can’t have it all since this is a free application.

Anyway, I’m hoping that by this weekend, I’ll be squared away and be prepared for my 11mi run (with shoes) because in a fortnight, I really need to run 15mi! Or maybe, I’ll just do 13mi and walk the remaining 2mi so I don’t shock my body into doing too much too soon. I deffo don’t want to get my left knee injured again (or just get injured, period!)

Time to get more gold stars (or happy faces!) for my calendar ^_^

MyFitnessPal

Calorie CounterOK, I haven’t lost my mind but I need to lose 12 lbs in order to get to my target weight! No, I’m not turning anorexic but I just realised that I have gained some pounds over the summer and whilst I was in the process of losing those extra pounds, I thought of adding on a few more pounds to lose to get to a target weight that I’ve been thinking about for a while, but haven’t really been serious about doing it.

So, I’ll be using the website MyFitnessPal to track my progress by entering what I eat, and entering the exercise that I do (essentially, I’ll be counting calories burned/inake). I happened to come across this site whilst waiting for my Mum @ her dentist today (she was having 3 root canals!). Eek. Anyway, they had free Wi-Fi and whilst browsing on my iPhone, thought about getting an app for health and this was  one of the first listed apps. :) I thought that since I’m so into my iPhone right now, I’ll be more inclined to actually follow through (since I’ll have a phone-interface and web-interface to work with!)

My goal is to lose a pound a week… Don’t know exactly if I’ll be able to do that, but I’m hoping to reach close to my target weight by the time I run my 9th marathon. I’m also hoping to reduce the size of my waist, i.e., gut! since you can enter your neck, waist and hip measurements (so it’s not just about weight).

I know I already won’t eat right after a week (LOL) but with any luck and some discipline, I can at least match my intake to my activity… Ahhh, who am I kidding? Let’s see how far I go before dropping this altogether. +_+

p.s.,
If you’re on MyFitnessPal, LMK! We can be “friends” on there and encourage each other ^_^ The app is also available for phones running Android OS ;)
