On living… to the fullest!

Friday, 16 September 2011 | 11:14 am

Sometimes, it takes a death of a friend — succumbing to pancreatic cancer — to be reminded that one should live life to the fullest, and with purpose!

On what would be Herman’s 40th Birthday, 6 months and 15 days after his passing, I can’t help but ponder what I’ve done to ring true to the promise I made to myself after his burial: live as if it were your last day! :) So I’ve gone back to church (volunteering to sing with the Choir, even — it’s a great sense of community worship), made more of an effort to attend friends’ birthday parties (since each new year you are living is something to celebrate!), tried to spend more time with friends and family (like, two weekends ago when I finally went riding with my other bro after several invites from him), and being more charitable, whether it’s raising money for the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research under Team Herman, supporting other charity work, pro-bono clients, helping my 80-something-year old neighbour get on Facebook so she can communicate with her great grandchildren… ^_^

It’s cheesy but I’m trying to get the most out of my time here on earth before I beam up to the mothership, the JSS Heaven. Muahaha. But seriously, I know I still have a lot to work on — like eating smarter, training for races consistently, less-OCB, become a truly forgiving person, less vain (too late XD ), less-road rage (Oops!), and other stuff that pisses me off — but short of turning into the Buddha or Saint Raciel of Old Torrance, I’ll just accept what I have and continue appreciating even the smallest things in life…

Herman truly celebrated life, loved his family and friends, and made the most out of silly situations:

3out of 5

Sizing: Feels too large

Sleeve Length: Feels too long

Pros: Attractive Design, Versatile, Lightweight

Cons: Poor Fit, Unflattering Shape

Best Uses: Work, Daily Use, Going Out

Describe Yourself: Casual Dresser

Was this a gift?: No

This looked so good on the photo but when it arrived, I knew that it would be too big. I wish I can have it taken in (I ordered the Small, even!) but even then, I might end up spending more money to have it altered than what I paid for the product!

The photo is somewhat deceiving in a sense that it seems like the cut by the waist is somewhat fitted, but the cut itself doesn’t curve (and there are no snaps on the back to form the waist).

The ruffles are as adorable on-screen as they are on the actual product though! And so are the slightly puffed shoulders, albeit roomy sleeves. They add a unique look and feminine touch to the jacket, and I’m rather disappointed I have to return it because of the size.

PALA Complete! October overloaded, redux.

Presidential Active Lifestyle Award - done!

Presidential Active Lifestyle Award - done!

Arbitrary challenge to shock me into fitness: COMPLETE.
Certificate awarded for completing the challenge: downloaded. :)

Other Thoughts:
8 straight-weeks of 5-times-a-week physical activity (of at least 30 minutes) was initially a shock to my sedentary system, but towards the fourth week, I got the hang of it. Towards the sixth week, body was craving the endorphins! ;) Now the real challenge begins: keeping this fitness up and not falling back into just working out during the weekend, especially with another Overloaded October (albeit, not as overloaded as October of 2010).

Yes, I might have over-scheduled my October (again). I’m kicking it off with my second Hermosa Beach Triathlon, then a week later, my first Nike Women’s Marathon (I’m only running the half, thankfully), then at the end of the month, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles Half Marathon. Less mileage than last year’s Overloaded October, but considering I’ll also be celebrating my milestone birfday and then Sheryl & Peter‘s wedding, I’m counting that as if I’m doing two more races. Haha.

Anyway, back to PALA — I think the Competitor Group mentioned something about getting a free t-shirt at the completion of the challenge. That’s yet to arrive but I’m not holding my breath. I think my 10K PR a few weeks ago is reward enough, but a free shirt would still be cool… Hehehe.   ;)

Oh, total number of workout hours was around 35 hours or something around that amount 38 hours and 25 minutes. That really doesn’t sound like much but doing the maths, it turns out to be around an average of 52 57 minutes/day for the 8 weeks (5 days a week)… Again, better than my previous inconsistent pseudo-training and periods of slothfulness  ;)
