Injury fears allayed. w00t!

Monday, 13 September 2010 | 06:56 pm

Well, I think I’m fine — that is, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with my left tibia/shin, as previously thought. ^_^

I ran 13 miles on Saturday with no issues but for some hotspots under my foot and left pinky toe being squished by my shoe; that’s right, I’m back to shod running.

And then… I also did an odd run/walk interval for the first time: 30/1 — that’s run 30 minutes, walk 1 minute. LMFAO. I sort of planned not stopping, but I knew I had to take my race nutrition every 30 minutes anyway, so I thought if I could go for 30 minutes without stopping, then I’d do it; otherwise, I was going to revert to my usual 6/1 interval (which, now that I think of it, haven’t done since I began unshod training).

And then… You know how you’re not supposed to introduce too many new things in your training in one go? Well, not only did I return to shoes and then did a 13-mile run, I also did the entire 15-miler in new shoes (Saucony Grid Type A4 — review to follow!) …and I wonder why I get injured ;)

So even with all of the above, there haven’t been any lingering pains in the area of my left shin. WHEEEEEE! I’ll be taking some precautions this week, though. As much as I need to run, I’m probably going to end up doing more swimming and low-impact cardio training midweek in an effort to sustain myself for the weekend’s long runs. I just don’t want to risk it, just in case… Of course, all of this can be cleared up (or confirmed) by a doctor and probably an X-ray, but again, I’m stubborn and won’t see one until after all my October races. >_<

Gear used: Saucony flats, KT Tape (shin), compression socks, compression long sleeve shirt, Amphipod water carrier, Phiten titanium necklace

On Sunday, my sis and I were going to do our usual bike training, but neither of us were up for it. We went swimming instead! I did 750m for about 20 minutes. I’m feeling much better swimming longer (i.e., without stopping), too — but there’s so much more room for improvement ^_^

Confession (and workout mashup)

Friday, 10 September 2010 | 11:19 pm

Let me start by getting this off my chest first — I haven’t been running! In fact, I haven’t ran since Saturday, and I only did like 15 minutes on the hotel’s treadmill, or shall I say dreadmill.

Anyway, on Saturday (September 4th) I was feeling fine running on the treadmill and set it at approximately at a 11min/mile pace. I did notice, however, that I was making quite a bit of noise as I landed — it sounded as if I was stomping in rage, or something to that effect! It’s not like I didn’t warm up, either — I did a brisk walk for 5 minutes, ran for 10 and then cooled down for a few seconds with a walk. I followed that with stretching and then the weight machines they had at the gym: I worked my quads, butt, back, and chest and then did some free weights with the dumb bells. I didn’t do much — probably a set (or two) of about 14 repetitions at very low weights (less than 10!)

Afterwards, we went on with our brekkers, then wine tasting. Later that day, or rather at the end of the day (and after our 2-hour car ride home) my left foot give way, felt pain on my left shin and briefly couldn’t put any weight on that leg! The feeling was like, as if I had kicked a tree with my shin and it felt sore and bruised! There were no visible bruises, though — no swelling or anything like that and I definitely did not hit anything with that shin (and no, I wasn’t drunk — we went wine tasting, not drinking ;) )

Nearly a week later, the left shin pain acts up here and there, but I can bear weight on it. I’m somewhat worried it’s a micro-fracture of some sort. Can you tell I self-diagnose? Still, I don’t really want to see a doctor for fear of what he might say (i.e., that it is a fracture). Or it could be nothing! Probably shin splints from wearing my sister’s high-heeled Cole Haan sandals (they’re supposed to be comfy cos they’ve got Nike Air! LMFAO) Ugh. We’ll see… I have a 15mi run scheduled tomorroz (run 13, walk the remaining mileage) and my first triathlon (sprint-distance) is exactly a month away. If the run goes well, I’m going to take next week off and do some non-impact workouts instead (just to be on the safer side). If it goes awry, then well, I’m heading to the doctor. :( I’m hoping it’s the former, though.

Onto my workout mashup for the week of September 6th – 10th:

Monday (September 6th)
Labor Day. Was on the road nearly the entire day. No training.

Tuesday (September 7th)
Lap swim 650m; Bike 11mi. Felt ok. Shin was fine, albeit felt some “light” pain later that day.

Wednesday (September 8th)
Lap swim 650m. Also, I ate too much >_<

Thursday (September 9th)
Half-assed strength training around 10PM because I felt guilty I missed my workout earlier that evening and ate too much. LMFAO

Friday (September 10th)
40 minutes strength training + core. 35 minutes of P90x’s Arms and Shoulders routines, and 5 minutes of abs. ROFL. Again, ate too much >_<

Bike Training: 12mi

Friday, 03 September 2010 | 10:26 pm

My post on Tuesday stated that I’d be doing a run on Wednesday evening. Well, I ended up doing some resistance/strength training that day, rather than go out on a shod run.

I did end up buying minimalist shoes, though! I’ll talk more about that in a separate post, since I really want to address my bike ride in this one. :)

So, the bike ride: another easy workout, though, I peppered it a bit with some more challenging spinning (meaning, not spinning at a leisurely pace). I tend to go “slower” since my bike rides are also part-coaching my sis to become adept at riding her bike. Plus, she’s got a mountain bike (which is waaay heavier than the road bike I’m using) so I’m really trying to slow down to match her speed.

One thing I wanted to note, as well was the weather — it was rather cold and windy (even with the head-winds!) that I thought that I’d end up falling ill after the ride. I ended up taking some much needed rest to make sure that I wouldn’t get a cold or summat (I’m really careful because I haven’t gotten sick in over a year and a half! *knocks on wood*)

Tomorrow, despite being on holiday, I plan to do at least 30 minutes on the treadmill (or rather, dreadmill) and perhaps some resistance training and a quick swim in the hotel pool… Won’t really make up for the fact that I need to do 13 miles tomorroz, but some activity is better than nothing, right?

Happy LABOR DAY!
