Quads sore. Ajax, JS, PHP to be continued.

Monday, 08 March 2010 | 09:03 am

I’m still sore; meaning, my quadriceps are screaming for stretching and all that jazz to free it from its bonds of tightness  (or something like that). I used The Stick today and rolled it over my aching muscles. I think the last time I used it was, er, I can’t even remember the last time I used it! >_< Gonna do some P90X stretching today, too.

In other news, I really need (as in, FOR REAL this time) to learn Ajax, JavaScript and PHP. I’ve been talking (mostly to myself and sometimes, with actual people) about learning these technologies but I haven’t really gotten too far. The closest I got to starting was creating a “Hello World” page in PHP and something similar in JavaScript ages ago. Fast forward to today and I really haven’t anything to show for it! I can train for long distance races for weeks-on-end but I can’t train my mind to write (Java)scripts!

As 43things.com keeps nagging me about the 8 silly things I want to do (#2, #3 and #7 in particular are to learn JavaScript, learn SQL, and learn PHP respectively), all I do when I receive the reminder emails is to delete them :( But NOT today! I am finally going to use this book which Amanda hath given me and will put “Sams Teach Yourself Ajax, JavaScript and PHP” to good use (amongst the other “Sams Teach Yourself” books I have been bequeathed several Christmases ago)!

And rather than just do silly scripts (e.g., Hello World) that will never see the light of day, I am working towards having a fully functional website by, er, let’s give myself um… UGH. I can’t even decide on the deadline. >_<

What’s a realistic deadline to learn 3 “technologies” from the ground up? 30 days? 60 days? 6 months? 1 year? LOL. HALP.

BRB whilst I figure out the deadline. >_<

Alrighty. Soz about that. With the help of some cool peeps, I am giving myself THIRTY days (30) to learn the basics of Ajax, JavaScript and PHP. After that milestone, I will give myself another two months to learn the even more complex functions/technologies within said applications whilst working towards the Bearuu Project. Then, giving myself another two months to really be really comfortable working with it. I’m hoping by the sixth month, I would have a fully-functional website where I have incorporated what I have learned and then some. It’s a lofty goal, but I either crash and burn or succeed (mostly leaning towards the latter!)

I wish I can dedicate 24-hours-a-day to learning, but alas, life (i.e., and the stuff that you need to do in order to keep living) continues. I am pledging to dedicate at least three to four hours daily* of what I’d normally do for recreational activities (i.e., telly, social networking, scanning the forums, MW2 on PS3, etc.) into learning. That being said, good-bye DVR of the shows, I’ll limit reading/sending tweets and the # of forums I visit, will put my campaign on MW2 on hold until I can produce something worthy of what a web programmer can probably churn out in ten minutes. >_<

Wish me luck! ^_^

Long Run Training: 20 miles

Sunday, 07 March 2010 | 12:02 pm

Talk about jumping right back into training. I took two weeks off to rehabilitate my left knee (which was acting up) and although the swimming (and water jogging) did very well to get me back into fitness, running on concrete/asphalt is totally different.

That being said, I took my time during this training run and was careful not to over-exert myself. That meant running two  minutes slower than my normal pace to get back into the swing of things.  I also walked the last two miles, rather than do my 6/1 intervals until the end.

I felt some pain earlier on my right knee but managed to shake it off — I think I was just getting excited over running again. I didn’t really feel anything else (which is good!) until towards the tail end of my run. Essentially, my quads were really getting tight and my shoulders were stiffening up. I attempted to loosen them up with some high knee and “bum kicks” during my walk breaks and that seemed to make it better.

Overall, I think I had a good training run: my knees feel fine and though my quads are super sore right now, I’m going to stretch later today. :)

For recording purposes, I used both Garmins — the Forerunner 50 (to track my distance, Heart Rate) and then the Forerunner 201 (to track my distance, pace and keep track of the intervals). I also posted this on Daily Mile. :)

Super-sprint Tri!

Thursday, 04 March 2010 | 08:27 pm

I’m seriously considering (as in, am 90% away from registering) for the Spring Sprint Triathlon & Duathlon! I’m planning on doing the super-sprint distance, that is, half of a sprint triathlon (200 meter swim, 6 mile bike, and 1.5 mile run). I think it’ll totally be doable, since it’s 2 months after the LA marathon and about a month before the San Diego marathon.

The registration is kinda steep, though $65 for the mini-sprint (only $5 cheaper than their sprint distance), but still, it’ll definitely get my feet wet (figuratively and literally) into triathlons… Perfect prep for the Hermosa Beach Tri, me thinks. If I put $50 more as a donation for the UCSD Cancer Center, I get “Breakfast buffet and commemorative T-shirt, in addition to the VIP Option package which includes reserved bike racks in transition area, supporter bib, swim cap, water bottle, goodie bag and timing chip”. ^_^

My sis, Minel (aka Ms Manic Marathon Runner [ 26 races and counting] + veteran/Olympic-distance Triathlete) said that I should totally do this race (she’s actually encouraging me to do the sprint from the get-go!). Though she has never done this particular race, she’s done another tri event @ Mission Bay and said that it’s the perfect place to learn. She did mention though, that Mission Bay is quite dirty so I shouldn’t exhale through my mouf! LOL.

The map looks neat-o, too… Again, doable and not too overwhelming. OK, I’m getting excited and I haven’t even registered yet! ^_^

Lap Swim: 900 m

Thursday, 04 March 2010 | 05:32 pm

Oh yeah — someone (c’est moi!) completed all 3 drills today, and then some! :)

10×25 Thumb-to-Thigh / 15 seconds rest-in-between
10×25 Touch-and-Go / 15
10×25 Closed Fist / 15

50m Right side flutter kicks
50m Left side flutter kicks

25 Cool down, breast stroke

This makes me feel a bit better than yesterday (I skipped all my workouts!) and am (sorta) looking forward to my 20-miler this weekend… in preparation for the LA Marathon!. ^_^

Lap Swim: 550 m

Wednesday, 03 March 2010 | 11:54 am

My training for the LA Marathon continues and although I have not run for 2 weeks (rehabilitating my left knee), I have been keeping up my cardio with some lap swimming. So yesterday, I finally completed 2 out of 3 drills — 1 more drill than I am able to complete for the past 2 weeks LOL. This essentially means that I’m getting stronger and (I think) am getting back to the same level of fitness I was in prior to my Camp Pendleton Hard Corps marathon last year.

Thumb-to-Thigh: 10×25 with 15 seconds recovery in-between
Touch-and-Go: 10×25 / 15

This afternoon, I’m hoping to do all 3 drills and then later tonight run at least 3 miles in preparation for my 20 mile run this weekend. Eeek.

4 hours X-train?

Saturday, 27 February 2010 | 07:45 pm

Does 4-hours worth of snowboarding count as cross-training?

I think I’ve practically undone that with some carne asada and two margaritas. Ugh. Why do I always over-do m physical activity with overblown meals! Actually, let me add a quarter plate of chilli cheese fries (and half of a chilli dog), as well. >_<

Still, I can definitely feel the burn in my quads and I’m sorta counting today as a workout day (albeit won’t note about it on my Daily Mile record).

In other news, a 8.8 magnitude quake hit Chile earlier today. I never thought that I’d hear about an 8.8 Richter scale earthquake in my lifetime. Sad and rather frightening at the same time. If I were the conspiracy type (and sometimes, I am), I’d say it’s nearing the end of the world (with Haiti and then this…), *sigh* it could also just mean that Mother Earth is rebelling against us. WTH am I talking about?! Iono. Something for you to ponder this evening, I suppose.  +_+

Gold stah!

Thursday, 25 February 2010 | 08:05 pm

I gave myself a gold star today.

WTH am I talking about? Well, remember in kindergarten when you’d be good, you’d get a gold star sticker from your teacher? LOL. Yesh, times haven’t changed and I give myself a gold star sticker to slap on my calendar whenever I complete a scheduled workout.

Lately, I’ve only been doing like, half of my scheduled workouts so I cut the sticker in half before slapping it on. However, today, I gave myself a whole gold star (wheeee!) for doing three (3) cardio midweek workouts in a row.

Check out my Daily Mile reports for additional details.

Supreme wOOtage.

p.s.,
The day’s not over. I’m going to do 30 minutes of resistance training (arms) and which will render me exhausted and will most likely pass-out around 8:30PM. lolz.

Progress

Wednesday, 24 February 2010 | 09:42 am

I did about 10 minutes of core workout last night — 10 out of 17 minutes! LOL. I couldn’t hang on and finish the entire workout! Ahhh. Obviously, I’m regretting it this morning since now that I think about it, I gave up way too quickly for relief. Later tonight, my sis and I are going lap swimming. I’ll be repeating that the next day and that will be it for my Mammoth preparation! :)

Anyway, back to the “progress” (obviously, not my abs!); I think my knee is feeling considerably better. The glucosamine supplement and quadriceps workout are definitely working! YAY! Not to mention staying off the impact exercises for nearly 2 weeks now. Now I just have to gradually ease back into running next week. I’m half-afraid to jump right back into my 20-miler next Saturday and will probably just do 17 or 18, then my tper it off to 12 the week before the LA Marathon, but I’m glad I’ve stuck to my alternate training despite wanting to just go out there and run.

The quote below sums up why I’m taking my time (and yet being mindful of the time… ahhh the marathon is but 24 days away!) with alternate training:

Running should be a lifelong activity. Approach it patiently and intelligently, and it will reward you for a long, long time.

– Michael Sargent

Running is a lifelong activity and as I hear some “horror” stories of why some people don’t run any more (whether through injury or lifestyle change), I try to remind myself of a number of the active older adults (i.e., senior citizens) who have easily passed by me in one or two marathons I’ve ran in the past! :)

Anyway, I know the sensible thing to do is not to run LA and just continue this therapy training. Unfortunately, I can’t and don’t wanna have my first “No-Show” or worse — “Did Not Finish” with this race. There’ll be other LA Marathons, yeah, but this one’s special cos it’s my inaugural LA run. ^_^ But don’t worry, I’ll be mindful of my effort and exertion, that is, I’ll listen to my body more during the race!
