Pack Running

Monday, 21 November 2011 | 05:08 pm

My sis and I finally made it to our first official LA Leggers’ training run for the LA Marathon. I say first, because I haven’t been good about waking early enough to meet with the Leggers. Eep! Determined not to miss it again, last Saturday, we caravanned with our friend (and Leggers’ Pace Leader, Ann); this meant that we had accountability via third-party (which worked) and we had minutes to spare when we arrived at the Santa Monica Senior Center, the meeting point.

Anyway, sis and I had planned on joining the 12 min/mile pace group (or 12′s) but en route, I was already thinking that it might be too-fast-of-a-group to join, considering we had missed a few key training runs and the prescribed mileage for that morning was 16. I thought of joining the 13′s, but wasn’t too keen on their run/walk intervals so the next logical choice was join the 12.5′s (12:30 min/mile average pace).

Running with a pack — where there was barely 3 feet of space between you and the person in front of you — was definitely an odd experience at first. It felt like I might nip the heel of the person in front of me but was able to maintain my distance, whilst still keeping up with the pace. I guess I experienced my first real sensation of drafting since the first eight miles were rather effortless, despite having an average moving pace of 11:30 min/mile (I normally do my long runs at around 12 – 13 min/mile).

My sis and I fell back at the restroom break around mile 8 (we were in Marina del Rey by then). Thankfully, one of the pace leaders (she was the sweep) stayed with us until the turn around and ’til we rejoined the group around mile 12 (my sis fell even further back around mile 10, though.) It was around mile 13 that I was feeling the burn and finally between miles 14 and 15, I dropped off and walked the rest of the way back with another lady in our group who was having IT Band problems.

When we got back to the Senior Center, I was still short about .45 miles so I turned around and searched for my sis (though, that was after a few minutes of chatting and stretching, with Ann). I didn’t have to double-back too far to find my sis (who walked the rest of the way!) and when we returned, my watch read 16.14mi… Success!

I’m glad we got to do the mileage and am even more excited to have finally made a training run with the LA Leggers. I will definitely need to keep up with this, especially since I really want to do well in LA next year. For reals. LOL.

Check out my run via Garmin Connect. I wasn’t able to take any photos, but I do have two that I took, the first one was en route (you wouldn’t be able to tell that I took that photo in the morning!) and the other was when I arrived at the Senior Center lawn (where the LA Leggers pace groups assemble).

I haven’t posted a workout record in a while — on here anyway, since I mostly use DailyMile and Garmin Connect to log my workouts! So, I thought of doing a visually pleasing one and may try to do so every week (a visual workout record) for shytes and giggles. ;)

Anyway, last Saturday, my sis and I missed our individual alarm clocks (read: we didn’t wake up) and thus missed yet another LA Leggers training run. The prescribed mileage was 14 miles and we decided that since we’ll be running on the hills of Palos Verdes (PV), 10 miles would suffice (that, and we had just done a half-marathon the weekend before. Race report to follow…)

After the first four miles, we reached our first water/potty break area — the Point Vicente Interpretive Center.

Unfortunately, that morning the water fountain was not working (whether broken or turned off). We had a bit of water left in our bottles (even after taking our energy gummies/shots) but knew we’d have to refill soon. I knew that further down (about three-quarters of a mile away) was another rest stop that had a water fountain, so we proceeded on our run.

The water fountain was within the (relatively newly-) developed area called Terranea, and it’s actually a resort + golf course + residences. After I filled my water bottle, and whilst waiting for sis to finish topping up hers, I spotted a trail map and thus began our adventure (or mini-adventure!)

We normally don’t run on trails (both are directionally challenged) but since this was a pseudo-trail (dirt-paved, fenced, marked!), we definitely had a bit of fun running/jogging walking about. And yes, we stopped for photos. We Asian, after all. ;) Enjoy!

We ended up doing a scenic (read: slow — lol) 11 miles. Check out the stats (and map) on Garmin Connect. There was a bit more trail (past the resort) but we were beginning to feel the strain of our hike. LOL. I got back to the car earlier than sis (she walked the last two miles back) so whilst waiting for her at the Bluff, I took more photos… This time, facing the city.

Week 5, a 10K PR, and NWM training update

Monday, 22 August 2011 | 12:08 pm

I’m holding up pretty well to the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) challenge. It’s been five weeks since I went from sedentary to at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day (5 days a week), and I’m noticing some inches lost in my waistline, albeit there’s still a bunch of jiggly bits here and there. :D I did lose some weight but I’m guessing it’s just water weight. Still, I attribute this increased activity to better fitness as I PR’d my 10K last Saturday!

It was the Jet to Jetty run, which I paid $0 thanks to being an LMU alumni (they had a special code for Active.com) and got to run in the “Centennial Lions” team. Race report to follow but yeah, I was pretty excited to PR my 10k! ;) Oh, bonus: I saw Sheryl & Peter, Sheryl’s bro and his wife, and Sheryl’s parents at the race! I briefly got to speak with her and finally met her sis-in-law, Trang, whom I’ll be seeing again this weekend at Sheryl’s bridal shower!

So back to running: I did my first long run training for my Nike Women’s (half) Marathon in October (10k race + 1mi ran from parking lot to breakfast place). The combined makes 7mi for my scheduled long (short) run! I also did nearly 2 miles of bike training for the Hermosa Beach Triathlon. LOL. Pitiful  bike ride but I think I’m back on track for run training, though!

Overall, it was a pretty active weekend — oh, I went climbing on Sunday, too. I think by tomorroz, though, I will really feel the effects of all that activity. Haha  :)

Below is my medal from my 10k personal best… Hehehe.
