Want… Compex Sport

Thursday, 29 July 2010 | 11:15 am

I’d forgotten that I had subscribed to the Compex newsletter and I got an email from them today regarding a 48-hour sale on their product! AHHHHH.

If you haven’t the foggiest what I’m talking about, check out the video below.

If you don’t have Flash (or can’t see the video above), it’s basically a device that simulates your muscles using EMS (electrostimulation). I had gotten a device demonstration when Sheryl and I were at the LA Marathon expo last March (2010). They stuck the electrode pads on my left calf and then used the “Active Recovery” setting. It was rather scary at first since it felt like my muscles were being shocked but after five- or so minutes, I had gotten used to the sensation and actually liked it!

I wanted to pick one up right there but the price was just waaaay too steep ($579.99!). Today, and up until Friday, though, one can get it for 10% off (they have the email discount code: 48SAVE10). Still, despite this discount, it’ll still end up being $572.74 (with California tax factored in — they’re a company based in Carlsbad, CA!) Ugh! I need more disposable income.

Maybe if I finally get my 5:30 marathon PR, I’ll consider saving up for this. I mean, it’s a product I can use over-and-over for my marathon and triathlon training and one can buy more electrodes if you need to share the product with someone else (i.e., sisters, Sheryl, my brothers…)

Then again, I can just build muscle and actively recover the traditional way (resistance training and swimming, respectively) and save that five-hundred bucks on something more important… like a trip to Orlando, Florida to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! LOL

Yet another mashup!

Let’s see, my last post was about the 4th of July 5k race, which was basically posted six days after the race… Then this latest one is nearly a fortnight after that! Eek.

Anyway, I’ll try to post this as I recall them:

  • Mum and Dad safely arrived from Cairo via Schiphol on the 7th, actually. First thing we did that afternoon was go to Costco to have some $1.50 Hebrew National hot-dogs and soda! LOL My mum was celebrating her 60th birthday so this summer trip was extra special. :)
  • Spent a few great days in Vegas! It’s basically mum’s fav city to spend her birthday (or during any time of the year!) I actually didn’t gamble this trip, but I did find an equally addictive game called “Derby Owners Club” at Gameworks (you “create” a horse and then nurture, train and race it for recognition… OK it’s really much more fun than it sounds ;) )
  • I promised some piccies in my previous posts so here they are in the following order: How to mount your timing chip on your Vibram Five Fingers (KSO), My knee scrape (before and after) and my lil bro’s stick figure drawing of how I got said knee scrape! LOL

Recap: Village Runner 5k

Saturday, 10 July 2010 | 10:40 pm

Nearly a week after this race, I still haven’t fully recovered! But more of that to come. I wanted to initially PR this race but a week before running it, I decided that I’d rather help my li’l bro PR it, instead of trying to get another one of my own.

On race morning, we were already running late (no one woke up early enough so we could have our pre-race day routine: coffee, oatmeal, bathroom) that we literally got dressed and drove ourselves to the race site. I’m glad we opted for this Village Runner 4th of July 5k instead of the Will Rogers 5k — the difference being the location! Will Rogers 5k was held @ Pacific Palisades (about a 40 minute drive north of our home) whereas the Village Runner 5k was less than 5 miles away.

Anyway, even if we got up late and missed brekkers, we got to the race site a full thirty minutes before the start. This meant we had enough time to (somewhat) warm-up and do some light ballistic stretching. Also, since it was chip timing, we didn’t have to stand extra close to the start line.

Before the race began, I ran into my friend, Cristina (we met each other at those Nike runs I used to pace) and her husband, Del was already around the start of the race (he’s a speedy guy!). Cristina wanted to PR the race herself and her goal was sub-30. I invited her to run with me and my li’l bro since that was our goal too but she ended up doing her own thing (during the first half of the race anyway!)

The national anthem was sung, the fake gun fired and off we went! I told my bro to go at a 10 min/mile pace at the beginning to warm up and then gradually speed up accordingly. I’m glad we took it somewhat slow in the beginning because this course had a few hills innit!

The course was also out and back, which I’m not keen of, btw, mostly because I don’t want to see people running back, especially since I haven’t the foggiest clue where the turn around point was! :)

Anyway, towards the 2nd mile, I tripped! Yes, as in full on “superman” on my tummy, nearly-kissed-the-ground, sort of spill. >_< I’m still not sure what happened or how I tripped (I might’ve been having a conversation with my friend, Cristina, who we ended up seeing around that time when somehow, I just tripped!). LMFAO. I actually got up on my feet right away since my Garmin never showed me stopping! The entire fiasco took seconds, but it felt like I was on the ground for 5 minutes!
